Leisure Business Days 2016

Goof Lukken
Goof Lukken, amusement park, recreation and zoo expert, trend watcher and marketing expert, will reveal his vision of the future of the leisure industry to you.

"I will be giving a presentation about “what city centers/big cities can learn from theme parks”. Of course city centers are not the same as theme parks but they have more in common than you would have thought. Earlier this year I published about this topic in the Dutch Newspaper ‘Het Parool” . I used he case of Amsterdam being compared with a theme park because of the growing flow of tourists. Instead of seeing this as a growing problem, see it as a chance. Especially theme parks have a great track record of handling large amounts of people. Furthermore they are doing very well in hospitality, infrastructure, creating experiences, storytelling and making money. Most cities/ city centers are currently struggling with their retail locations, or are trying to attract more tourists or visitors. Thinking in the theme park model can help them to develop sustainable strategies for the future. Next to my presentation some of our students will apply this ‘way of thinking’ to several cases."

TANYA GRIFFITHS Director, Kay Elliott Architects
‘Designing for the experience economy in retail environments.’"Kay Elliott are architects and designers specialising in visitor attractions. Increasingly, visitor attractions are being integrated within retail environments as complementary and economically sustaining activities. We work with the particular challenges of technically bringing these together but also work to ensure visitors come away with memorable experiences."

Kay Elliott Architects have wide ranging expertise in the experience economy sector predominantly at the ‘midway’ scale which we design and have been built all over the world. These are visitor attractions normally in urban rather than park locations, many of our projects are successfully integrated within retail environments and often in attraction clusters.

The talk will explore the particular concerns of designing visitor attractions and leisure facilities within retail centres and the potential synergies and challenges when combining the activities.

The talk will encompass various topics including understanding visibility, movement, wayfinding and brand integration in a competitive commercial environment. The role of IPs and focus on family entertainment as trends within in the sector is also of relevance in considering the market appeal and competition.

We will also look at ways of building anticipation and spectacle, regenerating existing attractions, the use of technology and the importance of quality in the public realm. Some of the pragmatic issues of size, sustainability, other concerns relating to optimum positioning, queuing and operational design matters, will also be covered.

Ultimately our work is about fun and creating memorable experiences, we hope to offer an insight into how this is achieved in retail environments.
